Merckx's 5th and Final L-B-L Victory

World Champion Eddy Merckx returned to Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 1975 after illness kept him away the year before. Merckx entered LBL with recent victories in Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders.

When the race hit the Cote de Stockeu, Merckx launched his usual long ‘Cannibal’ attack. Unlike previous years Merckx had company over the top of the Stockeu. Walter Godefroot, Roger de Vlaeminck, and Bernard Thevenet led the group of stayers on Merckx’s wheel.

The race flew into Liege and hit the closing circuit on the Boulevard de la Sauveniere at top speed. Bernerd Thevenet jumped away through the final corner. Merckx sprinted past the Frenchman in the final 100 meters to claim his fifth and final L-B-L victory.
